If you’re familiar with works translated from Chinese it will still feel like a translation – but it’s one of the best I’ve ever seen, easily on a par with the Shapiro translation of Outlaw of the Marsh, which has long been my gold standard. Ken Liu has tread a very masterful line between preserving the cadence of speech and the structure of the story on one hand, while providing a book that flows correctly in English. As a result, translations of Chinese novels often have issues with pace. Chinese fiction, especially, has a different pace and structure from western fiction. And that’s part of what makes this book so exceptional. The Three Body Problem starts with a gut-punch and never lets up from there. I’ll provide ample warning, so if you haven’t read the Three Body Problem and want to be surprised you’ll get plenty of warning. I really want to get into a thorough exploration of the work, but that’s going to tread into some spoilery territory, so what I’ll do is start with a brief review up top and then include the longer spoiler review at the bottom. It is the first book in the Three Body trilogy, and an exceptional starting point for people interested in reading Chinese genre translations. If you read one Science Fiction book this year, make it the Three Body Problem, by Liu Cixin, translated by Ken Liu. Check out how I made them at the bottom of this post. It was a quote from one of Craig’s apologetic teachers: “We should know our subject profoundly and share it simply.” Craig truly fulfills the spirit of this philosophy. The reader will surely not get a one-sided argument. Throughout the entire process, Craig carefully deals with all of the pertinent and weighty objections and opposing views. He starts at the beginning and then leads it straight to the core and central issue of Christ and the Resurrection. Craig doesn’t hit every conceivable topic in apologetics. Most notable about Reasonable Faith could be its depth. He does this by hitting the main issues, exploring the history of each issue, showing the strengths and weaknesses offered by the arguments, and then delving into the practical application of the issues covered. Craig’s overall goal is to present a comprehensive background of the primary apologetic arguments for God, Scripture and Christ. Reasonable Faith: Christian Truth and Apologetics by William Lane Craig is a tour de force of thorough, scholarly apologetic work. “Jack Liebowitz, a member of the Board of Directors of Warner Communications, stabbed Joe Shuster and me, Jerry Siegel, in the back. Siegel had just learned that somebody was making a multi-million dollar Superman movie, and it did not sit well with him, and he wanted people to know that. That’s the beginning of a ten-page typewritten manifesto penned in 1975 by Jerry Siegel, the co-creator of Superman. I hope the whole world, becoming aware of the stench that surrounds Superman, will avoid the movie like a plague. I hope loyal Superman fans stay away from it in droves.
