I was asked by the American author Jody Hadlock to create a painting based on her novel The Lives of Diamond Bessie. Hadlock’s unvarnished, sympathetic portrayal makes Bessie’s hardscrabble existence all the more heart-wrenching and transforms Bessie into a feminist heroine.
